On July 11, Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) held the ribbon cutting ceremony for the GTIIT south campus education building. Prof. Gong Xingao, Chancellor of GTIIT and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ms. Irit Ben-Abba Vitale, Israeli Ambassador to China; Prof. Uri Sivan, President of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology; Prof. Aaron Ciechanover, 2004 Nobel Laureate and Special Envoy of the Technion President to GTIIT and other leaders and guests attended. Yigal Cohen, Pro-Vice Chancellor & Director General of GTIIT hosted the ceremony.

After the ceremony, leaders and guests planted a cypress tree at the south campus together. Cypress trees are planted at the entrance to the Technion historical building in Haida, and this tree symbolizes the friendship and cooperation between the state of Israel, the Technion and China.

Other guests attending the ceremony included: Prof. David Gershoni, Vice Chancellor of GTIIT; Prof. Moris Eisen, Pro-Vice Chancellor of GTIIT; Prof. Lin Danming, Pro-Vice Chancellor of GTIIT; Mr. Alex Goldman Shayman, Consul General of Israel in Guangzhou; other GTIIT board members including Rafi Aviram, Hao Zhifeng, Liu Wenhua, Frieda Law.
The ceremony highlighted a new chapter – 2nd phase of south campus operation. The second phase covers a construction area of about 121,000 square kilo meters, including teaching buildings, administrative building, library, teaching lab buildings, research center, pilot plant and supporting facilities.
This phase will be completed by the end of the year. The main building of the South Campus has a total of 78 classrooms, 156 offices and 31 meeting rooms, and the construction is basically completed.
The third phase is mainly the roads around the campus, which have been basically completed.
The freshmen of Cohort 2023 will live and study here at the beautiful South Campus, opening a new chapter for their university life.
